The Dawson Springs Panthers wrapped up the regular season with a solid win Saturday afternoon. The Panthers held off a 4th quarter rally from St. Mary and took a 69-65 win, ending the Vikings seven-game winning streak, which included a Friday night win over defending state champion Lyon County.

The Panthers entered the final quarter with a 55-44 lead and saw St. Mary come charging at them late in the game. Dawson Springs hit 8 of 8 at the line in the fourth to help secure the win. Free throws were a big factor in the win for the Panthers as they were 22 of 23 at the line for the day.

With Griffin Mayes scoring 11 in the first quarter, St. Mary took a 22-12 lead.

Dawson Springs battled back in the second to take a 32-31 lead at the half.

With Jaydon Plunkette, Rex Blue, and Montgomery Johnston leading the way, Dawson Springs outscored the Vikings 23 to 13 in the third to take a seemingly comfortable 11-point lead into the final quarter.

Montgomery Johnston scored 28 to lead Dawson Springs. He now has 1,941 points in his career, putting him in a tie with Jerry Bruce at the top of the Panther career scoring list.

Rex Blue added 17 points. Johnston was 10 of 10 at the free throw line, while Blue was 12 of 13. Jaydon Plunkette also hit double digits with 11. Easton Bourland just missed with 9 points.

Griffin Mayes led the Vikings with 23 points.

Dawson Springs ends the regular season at 16-14, guaranteeing that the Panthers will have a winning season, and marking the first time since the late 70’s that they have had winning seasons in back-to-back years.

The Panthers now get ready for a big district semifinal battle with Caldwell County Monday night in Princeton.
