The Crittenden County Lady Rockets entered Monday’s 5th District Tournament at Trigg County looking to buck a recent trend.

In three of the last four years and five of the last nine, the host school won the district championship on their home floor.

With Trigg County hosting this year, the Lady Rockets were able to avoid a first-round upset and handle the Lady Wildcats 64-28. Crittenden moves into Thursday’s championship game for a fourth straight season where they meet Lyon County, a 50-37 winner over Livingston Central in Monday’s other semifinal.

Not surprisingly, four-seed Trigg County played better on its home floor this season and stayed neck and neck and neck with the Lady Rockets early.

Reese Bush and Veyda Grinols hit consecutive 3-pointers to try and offset the hot start for Crittenden’s Anna Boone, who scored 10 straight points to push the Lady Rockets to a double-digit lead early in the second quarter.

Gabbi McGee hit a shot in the paint to draw Trigg to within seven points, but Crittenden answered with the final 16 points of the first half to take a 40-17 lead into halftime.

Boone scored 11 of her 20 points in the second quarter, while the switching defenses of the Lady Rockets kept Trigg off the scoreboard. The Lady Wildcats missed 11 of 12 shots in the quarter, while Crittenden scored 12 points off six Trigg turnovers.

Trigg’s scoring drought reached 7:44 and 30 straight Crittenden points before Grinols hit a short shot. By that time, Crittenden was ahead 54-19 which triggered the running clock.

In addition to Boone’s 20 points, she handed out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds while shooting 6 of 9 from the field and 5 of 6 at the free throw line.

Elliot Evans added 13 points, and Bristyn Rushing added sight points and six rebounds for the Lady Rockets, who beat Trigg County on its home floor in the district tournament for the first time. Crittenden County has won 11 straight games over Trigg County dating back to the 2020 district championship.

Monday was Crittenden County’s first district tournament game at Trigg County since 2017 when they beat Lyon County for the title. The Lady Rockets were the top seed in the 2021 tourney at Trigg but couldn’t play due to COVID protocol, ending their season.

Grinols scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Trigg, while Bush, the team’s lone senior, scored 10 points in her final game as a Lady Wildcat.

Crittenden County shot 52% from the field in each half, while Trigg County hit just 11 of 43 shots.
