Coby Lewis has been named the head football coach at Calloway County High School just months after being part of Paducah Tilghman’s Class 4A state championship run.
The school made the announcement on Tuesday morning.
“Coach Lewis brings a high level of excitement and passion to our program, and we look forward to a bright future,” said principal Steve Smith, who is familiar with Lewis from his days when Smith was a coach at Trigg County.
Lewis was the offensive coordinator for Paducah Tilghman in 2024 as the Blue Tornado averaged 47.5 points with quarterback Jack James setting several season and career passing records.
Lewis is a Trigg County High School graduate and was a member of Trigg’s 1989 state runner-up team. He served as an assistant coach at Trigg County and Madisonville before taking over as Trigg County head coach in 2011.
Lewis’ first year as head coach coincided with Trigg County’s move to Class 3A. The Wildcats were 7-4 in Lewis’ first year and won seven games in 2014. Their only playoff win in Class 3A came in 2014.
Trigg County was 45-53 in Lewis’ nine seasons with his 45 wins being the fourth most in program history.
Lewis also served as the powerlifting coach where Trigg County won several state titles.
He takes over a Calloway County program in a deep rebuild. The Lakers have lost 16 straight games dating back to the 2023 season and last advanced to the Class 4A playoffs in 2020 where they lost to Hopkinsville. The school has not won a playoff game (0-12) since making the state semifinals in 2008.
One of Lewis’ first tasks will be increased participation as the Lakers finished the 2024 season with 41 players on its varsity roster.
Calloway County will continue to compete in Class 4A, District 1 along with Allen County-Scottsville, Franklin-Simpson, Logan County, Warren East, and Lewis’ former team Paducah Tilghman.
The school said an official introduction to players, parents, and staff will be made on Thursday at 3:30 in the high school media center.
