After dropping four straight games and five of their last six, the Caldwell County Lady Tigers were looking for something to turn around their fortunes.
Monday’s game may have fit the bill.
Trigg County brought a 17-7 record to Princeton and had won nine of its last 10 outings. But Alexis Wood scattered five base hits as Caldwell blanked the Lady Wildcats 3-0.
Tember Oliver was solid in the circle for Trigg as well, but the Lady Tigers put together all of the game’s scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Oliver did not allow a base hit through four innings, but Grace Watson led off the fifth with a bunt single for Caldwell. Watson moved to second when Tink Clark grounded back to the pitcher. Josie Palm then bunted Watson to third.
Carlee Palm brought in the game’s first run with a two-out single to center. Daelen Kizzee followed with a bloop double down the left-field line that scored courtesy runner Serenity Oliver from first. Kizzee attempted to take third on the throw to the plate, but it was cut off in an effort to get Kizzee at third. However, that throw ended up the outfield, allowing Kizzee to score to make it 3-0.
Trigg got the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning on singles by Kady Fuller and Jayden Visingardi. But the next batter grounded back to Wood to end the contest.
Wood struck out five and did not walk a batter while picking up the win in the circle.
Oliver allowed two earned runs on four hits. She struck out one and walked one.
Veyda Grinols added a double for Trigg while MaKenna Hendricks and Maddie Smith had singles.
Adley Lewis singled for Caldwell, which is 9-10.
The Lady Tigers will play at home again on Tuesday when they host Mayfield for Senior Night.
Trigg will next go to Murray on Thursday.
