Sara Welshans took the first steps to repeating as champion on Monday, winning a pair of matches at the Region 2 Tennis Tournament in Henderson.
The Webster County senior opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hopkinsville’s Lainey Stewart in the Round of 16. She followed that with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Madisonville-North Hopkins’ Addyson Raymer.
Welshans, the top seed, will face Caldwell County’s Ella Johnson, the three seed, in Wednesday’s semifinal. Johnson defeated Henderson County’s Ashtyn Agnew 6-4, 6-4 in her opener and outlasted Lyon County’s Anna White 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
The other two top seeds also advanced to the semifinals.
Two-seed Macey Browning defeated Fort Campbell’s Olivia Voelkel 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, where she ousted Webster County’s Leah Herron 6-1, 6-1.
Browning will face Henderson County’s Jaylee Duncan in the semifinals. Duncan, the four seed, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Union County’s Allison Diebler. Duncan defeated Hopkins County Central’s Elissa Adams 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
By advancing to the semifinals, Welshans, Johnson, Browning, and Duncan will also advance to the KHSAA State Tournament at the end of the month at various locations in Lexington.
