The University Heights Academy Lady Blazers wrapped up pool play at the Gothia Cup on Wednesday with a 6-0 loss to Toarpsalliansen in the 18U division.

The Swedes scored two first-half goals and added four more in the match’s final 14 minutes. Anna Gunnarsson and Selma Kullberg each had a pair of goals for the Swedish team, which notched its first Gothia Cup win.

UHA was held scoreless for a third straight match as they worked to adjust to the international game, which involved a larger field and the European style of play.

After three consecutive morning matches, the Lady Blazers will play Thursday night against a team from either Sweden or the United States in bracket play at Fjardingsplan in Gothenburg.

The Gothia Cup is the world’s largest youth soccer tournament and features over 1,900 teams from 76 countries

Audrey Perry is a senior captain on the University Heights Academy soccer team and has been providing YourSportsEdge.com with a journal of the team’s trip to Sweden.

On Tuesday, we started our morning early with breakfast before heading to the field for our second game of the Gothia Cup. We played a team from Norway called Ranheim IL and lost 3-0. Although it was our second loss, these games are helping our team grow in many ways. We’re learning to rely on one another, to step up, and to keep pushing forward—even when the score isn’t in our favor.

After the game, we continued exploring Gothenburg and visited an area called Haga. It is a beautiful part of town filled with shops, cafés, and bakeries. We spent the afternoon walking around, shopping, and trying Swedish dishes for the first time. It was a great afternoon to spend time with our teammates and explore a little bit more of Sweden. We cannot wait to play another game and see more of Gothenburg.
