David Gusta had the fourth-highest pass rush grade of any interior defensive lineman in the country from Pro Football Focus in 2024 at Washington State.

He also earned the nickname “Bone” because his physical play in practice left a few teammates needing medical attention.

Gusta is also the rare college defensive lineman who considers himself a “nerd” and likes to collect figurines from Japanese anime.

Even the story of how he met his wife is a “bit” different.

He thought Angie Sandell was “beautiful” the first time he saw her when they met in a Domino’s Pizza parking lot in Pullman, Wash., and texted her.

“Originally, she had a man, and then I hit her up (on text). She turned it down. Time went on, and saw that he removed him (on social media). I thought that was my shot. I texted her, and now every anniversary we go get Domino’s (pizza),” he said.

He said his wife’s support means more than he can put into words and has been a huge help after his transfer to  UK.

“I’m real open about how I struggled with mental health my freshman and sophomore years. I’m a huge advocate for it (getting help). When I talk to people, that’s the first thing I usually get asked but she helped me so much,” Gusta said.

“I wouldn’t be here without her because football is such a stressful game, especially when you are put on a pedestal (by fans). It was not a norm for me because I was not a high recruit. I was not used to being put on a pedestal.

“That’s where she helped. I could just sit, talk with her and travel. Everybody needs that one person because you can’t go through life alone. When you are alone, you need to go find some help.”
