After giving up a score on the first drive of Friday’s scrimmage, Trigg County coach Chris Ezell wanted his team to play more physically and see how well they would respond to being in an early hole.

The end result was Trigg County doubling up Muhlenberg County four touchdowns to two in the varsity part of the scrimmage.

The opening scrimmage for both teams was played on a 50-yard practice field outside of Muhlenberg County’s Stadium due to the ongoing turf replacement inside the stadium.

Each team got three 10-play drives in the scrimmage.

Trigg County drove to the Muhlenberg 6-yard line but failed to reach the end zone on its 10th and final play.

Muhlenberg County needed just six running plays to reach the end zone for the first score of the contest.

The scrimmage was played with a no-quarterback contact rule, and defenses were awarded a sack if a tackle was imminent.

Trigg’s defense responded with two sacks on the next four plays to end the Mustang drive.

The Wildcats responded with touchdowns on consecutive plays. Caden Scott hit Peyton Williams on scoring throws of 18 and 50 yards to give Trigg a 2-1 lead.

Trigg’s third score of the scrimmage came on the final play of the second drive when Scott found Timmy Williams for a 36-yard pitch and catch.

Muhlenberg scored on a 20-yard run on its fifth play of its second drive. Trigg’s defense got a sack on three of the drive’s final five plays.

Trigg’s final score came on a 35-yard throw from Scott to Deontae Edison, who added four rushes for 33 yards.

Scott, who started the final eight games for Trigg County last year after Timmy Williams suffered a season-ending injury, was 12-of-19 passing for 192 yards and four touchdowns. He responded well after throwing an interception on his first attempt of the scrimmage.

Peyton Williams had four catches for 84 yards, and Timmy Williams added four catches for 51 yards. He also completed a pass for six yards.

Trigg County finished with eight rushes for 61 yards and 253 total yards.

Muhlenberg County had 18 rushing attempts for 144 yards and completed 5-of-7 passes for 50 yards.

Defensively, Trigg County recorded six “sacks” while the Wildcat offensive line gave up three.

Trigg County also won the JV portion of the scrimmage 3-0 on a pair of touchdown runs by Edison from 31 and 25 yards and a 25-yard scoring catch by Camden Rathburn.

The Wildcats will host Murray for their final preseason scrimmage on Thursday at Perdue Field.
