
University Heights Academy outshot Trigg County 24-6, but needed a late goal from Calvin Givens to subdue the Wildcats 2-1 in the opening match of the 2nd Region tournament.
Givens scored out front on a rebound with just 3:41 left in Monday’s contest in Henderson to advance the Blazers into Wednesday’s semifinal round.
UHA (16-6) will next face Madisonville-North Hopkins (7-10-1) which needed overtime to outlast Webster County 3-2 in Monday.
The Blazers took a 1-0 lead against Trigg County with 22:57 left in the first half. Hayden Hunt headed home a corner kick from Graham Conrad right in front of the net to put University Heights on top.
Trigg (8-7) evened the score with 25:30 left in the second half.
James Garnett got the ball over the goalkeeper following a free kick to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
That’s where the score stayed until late in the match.
Hunt created UHA’s go-ahead scoring opportunity with a move near the goal line. His cross from the left side was saved in front of the net. But the ball came out to Givens, who scored from inside the box to put the Blazers in the lead for good.
Hayden Fitzsimmons recorded three stops in the UHA net.
Cameron McCormick had 12 saves for Trigg.
The Blazers had beaten the Wildcats 4-1 during the regular season.
University Heights has taken its last seven matches with Trigg.
