The Lyon County Lady Lyons basketball team is preparing for the regular season, and they did so on Monday night against Marshall County in a scrimmage. The teams played four quarters and a five-minute “overtime” period, and the score reset after every quarter.
Both teams started the first quarter putting up a lot of shots from beyond the arc, but only made three combined. The Lady Marshals took a 10-7 lead into a timeout with three minutes left, and a few Lyon turnovers helped Marshall close it out and win the quarter 21-7.
As for the second, neither team was able to get consistent baskets in the early going, as there were a total of just 11 points scored in just the first half of the quarter. But after some more turnovers by the Lady Lyons, Marshall was able to build an 11-7 lead at a late timeout. Lyon was able to make a late layup, but Marshall was able to dribble it out and win the quarter 11-9.
In the third quarter, the Lady Marshals were able to get out and run, and they were able to hold a lead for the majority of the quarter as a result. A late three-pointer and some free throws from Piper Cotham led the Lady Lyons led to a bit of a comeback, but Marshall was able to hold on and win the third 14-12.
Both teams got plenty of shots up in the first few minutes of the fourth, but neither team was really able to capitalize on those chances. Marshall had a slim 7-2 lead with three minutes remaining, and despite a valiant effort from Lyon, they were able to close it out and also take the fourth period 13-5.
The two teams then played a five-minute “overtime” period, and the Lady Marshals got off to a very hot start. They started off on a 10-1 run, but the Lady Lyons were able to bring it all the way back and tie the game with a three from Courtney Collins. But some free throws and a fast break layup by Marshall County sealed the deal and gave them the win in the overtime period 14-10.
Cotham led the way for Lyon in terms of points with 16 points, and Lily Coffman also contributed nine points on three three-pointers.
The Lady Lyons will begin their regular season on Tuesday, December 2, against the Murray High Lady Tigers at home. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
