Trigg County coach Michael Fraliex knows the first two weeks of the season are usually rough when combining new players with those who didn’t see much floor time the season before.

The second-year Wildcat coach got to witness that first-hand on Tuesday as Hickman County hit nine 3-pointers and took advantage of Trigg’s mistakes to take a 68-52 win in Clinton. It was Hickman County’s first win over Trigg after eight straight losses.

The game was tied at two, but Hickman County used an 11-2 spurt to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish as six Falcons scored in the first quarter.

Hickman added a 13-0 run over the end of the first quarter and the first 3:10 of the second quarter to take a 30-12 lead – their largest of the game.

Down 37-21 at halftime, Trigg County battled back to within 43-36 with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

Trigg got to within eight points three times in the final frame, only to see Hickman County answer with a bucket on the ensuing possession each time. The Falcons hit 8 of 11 shots in the final quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 21-13.

Trigg County committed 26 turnovers, some of them against the Hickman press and some by a flurry of bad passes in the half-court. Hickman took advantage, scoring 32 points off the miscues.

The Wildcats used a 33-21 rebounding advantage to cut into the deficit after halftime.

Davaree Gude led Trigg County with 10 points and 11 rebounds. In his first varsity start, Karmelo Dixon was effective at the point, scoring nine points and handing out four assists.

Quin Baggett scored nine points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Landon Swann hit three 3-pointers and finished with nine points. Carter Shepherd came off the bench to score nine points in 12 minutes of action.

Nyiahez Irons scored 23 points for Hickman County despite not scoring in the second quarter. Kaden Grubbs added 13 points.

Trigg County has lost 12 straight games dating back to a January win over Hickman County at Wildcat Gym.

The Wildcats will travel to Fulton City on Friday in the second game of a girls/boys doubleheader.
