The Trigg County Lady Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start for the first time in four years following a 59-49 win at Kenwood High in Clarksville on Saturday.
One night after Veyda Grinols had a monster performance, Cali Jones had one of her own against the Lady Knights. The sophomore center had 23 points and 19 rebounds – both career highs as she notched her second straight double-double.
Grinols, who set a school record in Friday night’s win at Fulton City with 28 rebounds, also had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.
After a first half that saw neither team separated by more than five points, Trigg built a 41-31 lead thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Alexis Mayes and seven straight points by Grinols.
However, Kenwood got back-to-back 3-pointers from Sarai Townsend and Kaydence Stull to end the third quarter. Townsend hit another trey to start the fourth quarter and later added a free throw to get the Lady Knights to within 43-42 with 6:34 left.
Jones and Grinols combined to score Trigg’s next 13 points, and Kenwood was held without a field goal over the final 4:15 to secure the 10-point win.
Mayes finished with eight points, and A.J. Navarro chipped in with six points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
The Lady Wildcats overcame 26 turnovers, with Kenwood scoring only 12 points off them. Trigg outrebounded Kenwood 45-34 and had 18 second-chance points.
Saniya Seay led Kenwood (0-5) with 16 points, and Townsend came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and score 12 points.
Trigg won the only other matchup with Kenwood in 2023.
The Lady Wildcats will play at Murray Friday in a Class 2A sectional contest.
