The Lyon County Lyons may still be looking for the license plate number on that bus that left them in its wake Friday night. North Laurel, which came into this year’s Chad Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass ranked #6, smothered the Lyons with intense defensive pressure on the way to a 67-31 win.

The 31 points was the fewest scored by the Lyons since an 84-23 loss to Trigg County in January of 2006.

The Jaguars settled this one early with their defensive pressure, creating Lyon County turnovers at one end and easy baskets at the other end as North Laurel built a 23-13 lead after the first quarter.

The lead grew to 36-19 at the half as the Lyons struggled to find the basket. Lyon County shot 30.4 percent from the field in the half, including just 16.7 percent from behind the 3-point line. And things did not get any better for the Lyons as the second half got underway.

The Jaguars put the game away in the third quarter, opening the half with a flurry that pushed the lead out past 20 points. A 14-2 run midway through the period officially delivered the knockout blow as Lyon County would end up trailing 56-28 after three.

North Laurel’s defense would then hold the Lyons to just three points in the final quarter as the Jaguars ran away to the final 36-point margin.

Nolan Coffman led the Lyons with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Isaac Defew finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds, while Bray Kirk added 6 points.

Central Bank Player of the Game Reece Davidson led North Laurel with 22 points.

Lyon County shot just 22.9 percent from the field, including just 16 percent in the second half. The Lyons hit just 5 of 25 from behind the 3-point line.

The Lyons drop to 5-2 on the season and now move into the consolation bracket of the tournament, where they will take on Butler Saturday night at 9:00 in Fairdale.
