Trigg County needed a pair of double-doubles from Veyda Grinols and Cali Jones to defeat West Creek 51-31 on Friday at Trigg’s middle school gym.
Grinols tallied 25 points and 16 rebounds, and Jones added 14 points and 18 boards to help the Lady Wildcats move to 4-2.
Their efforts on the glass were needed to overcome 38 turnovers that contributed to 22 of West Creek’s 31 points.
The turnover count otherwise marred a solid second-half shooting performance (48%) and a 50-21 advantage on the glass.
With the game tied at 10 early in the second quarter, Grinols and Alivia Norwood combined for eight points in an 11-0 run that kept the Lady Wildcats moving forward.
Trigg led 21-12 at halftime only to see 13 third-quarter turnovers help West Creek chip into the lead, whittling it to 29-25 with 1:11 left.
The Lady Wildcats used a second 11-0 run as Grinols and Jones combined to score Trigg’s first 22 points of the second half. Meanwhile, West Creek made just one field goal in the first seven minutes of the final quarter, which saw Trigg outscore the visitors from Clarksville 21-6.
Norwood added seven points and three rebounds, who were playing without the injured A.J. Navarro. Trigg County had a 32-12 scoring advantage in the paint.
Aidalis Salazar came off the West Creek bench to score seven points, and Charlene Nunn added six points and seven rebounds.
Trigg County’s 4-2 start is their best pre-Christmas record since the 2020-21 season that began in January due to the COVID pandemic.
The Lady Wildcats will return to the court after Christmas in the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic.
