Coming off a tough overtime loss to their district rival Crittenden County on Tuesday night, the Lyon County Lady Lyons had to fight their way through a little carryover effect Saturday evening, but fight their way through they did. Three Lady Lyons scored in double figures as Lyon County turned back Russell County 64-62 in their opening game of the White Greer and Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic.
The game was tight from the very beginning. The Lady Lakers led after the opening quarter 19-17. Lyon County’s defense helped the Lady Lyons battle back in the second quarter to take a 34-30 lead into the half.
Russell County came out in the third quarter and trimmed the lead back to 51-49 heading into the final 8 minutes. The game was back-and-forth, but the Lady Lyons found the way to hold on for the two-point win.
For the night, there were 10 ties and 16 lead changes as neither team could get a firm grasp on the game.
Lyon County was led by Piper Cotham with 22 points. Trinity Taylor knocked on the door of a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Jenna Coursey added 13 points and 4 rebounds. Courtney Collins just missed out on a double-double with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
Addy Abrell was the leading scorer for Russell County with 22 points. McKenna Ccamaque hit for 16 points.
Both teams struggled from the field with Lyon County hitting 42.1 percent and Russell County hitting just 38.5 percent.
Lyon County (5-2) advances on to play Lafayette Sunday evening.
