Defense was the order of the day Sunday for the Lyon County Lady Lyons. For the second time this season, the Lady Lyons held an opponent to fewer than 30 points as Lyon County handled Lexington Lafayette 46-28 in the White Greer and Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic.
The Lady Lyons had their own struggles on offense early in the game, but still did enough to take a 9-6 lead after the opening quarter. Lyon County held the Lady Generals to just five points in the second quarter as the lead grew to 24-11 at the half.
The story of the half was the Lyon County defense holding Lafayette to just 4 of 20 shooting from the field. The Lady Lyons were a bit better at 9 of 28.
Lyon County continued to pull away from Lafayette in the second half, leading by as many as 19 at one point. The Lady Lyons led 36-19 after the third quarter and would go on to take the 18 point win.
A huge night for Jenna Coursey, who finished with 20 points. She was 9 of 12 from the field and pulled down 7 rebounds. Piper Cotham added 12 points and 9 rebounds. Courtney Collins and Lilly Coffman finished with 7 points each.
Lafayette was led by McKinley Emerson with 7 points. Addison Combs and Anna Clay Denton had 6 points each.
The Lady Lyons (6-2) advance on to take on last year’s All A Classic state champions Danville Christian Monday in the championship game of the tournament. DCA improved to 6-3 Sunday with a win over Dixie Heights.
