The Lyon County Lady Lyons basketball team went into their matchup with McCracken County having won their last seven games. They were able to keep their streak going, as they got the best of the Lady Mustangs with a close score of 58-54.
The Lady Lyons started off hot in the first quarter with a quick 7-0 run. McCracken’s first bucket came by way of a layup with just over four minutes left, and they were able to string together a few buckets and get the score back to 7-5.
Lyon took that personally, and went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter and go into the second up 16-5. Jenna Coursey led the way for them with eight points in the first.
They were able to hold that lead and extend it to 12 halfway through the second period. They were able to score a few more buckets, but the Lady Mustangs ended the half with a three to make it 26-15 going into the break.
McCracken started out the third with a flurry of buckets, and they forced a couple of Lyon timeouts after cutting the lead to just three.
But a three from Lily Coffman and nine points in the quarter from Courtney Collins helps the Lady Lyons hold their lead at 11 heading into the final period.
McCracken combatted this with a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter, but a layup from Coursey and a three from Collins made the lead 11 again. Lyon then became a bit careless with the ball, and the Lady Mustangs were able to capitalize on those mistakes and cut the lead to five.
But it was too little too late, and the Lady Lyons were able to make their free throws to help close it out. McCracken made a three in the final seconds of the game, but the final buzzer sounded, and Lyon walked away with their eighth win in a row with a score of 58-54.
This is now the second time in a row that Lyon has beaten McCracken, and those games come after them losing the previous three to the Lady Mustangs.
Collins led the team in scoring with 20, and she did so with four made shots from beyond the arc. Coursey was also able to get into double-digits with 14, and eight of those points came in the first quarter.
The Lady Lyons will be in search of their ninth win in a row in their next game against Caldwell County on Tuesday, January 13. Their game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Lyon County High School.
