Soriano’s Meet Record Helps Maroons Finish in Third Place

Sy Soriano set a region meet record in the 200-yard freestyle and helped Madisonville-North Hopkins finish third at Monday’s Region I Meet at Hopkinsville High School.

The junior was dominant, finishing in 1:46.61 and securing a 16-second margin of victory. His time beat the old region mark of 1:47.72 set by Paducah Tilghman’s Caleb Fell in 2018.

Soriano finished in second place in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 47.57 seconds was a little over a second behind the race winner and region record holder, Kellie Tobergte of Murray.

Soriano was also part of two runner-up relay teams and was named the Region’s Outstanding Male Swimmer.

Aiden Clark earned an automatic qualifying spot for the state first round in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in second place with a time of 6:02.40. He also came in third place in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.86.

The top two finishers at the region automatically qualify for the state first round this Saturday at Bowling Green High School. The next ten times in each event from Regions 1-3 will also qualify.

Jude Gamblin was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.03 seconds and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.90.

Gavin Bunch came in third place in the 200-yard IM in 2:15.57 and third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.51.

J.D. Brown was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.50 and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.23.

Camden Crowley was sixth in the 200-yard IM in 2:32.84 and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.27.

Jaden Gonzalez was ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:30.92 and 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:35.48.

Gage Garst finished in 12th place in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:36.72 and 14th in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.94.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Soriano, J.D. Brown, Gavin Bunch, and Jude Gamblin finished in second place with a time of 1:45.19. They also took second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.19.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Crowley, Gonzalez, Garst, and Clark finished in third place in 4:16.74.

Madisonville-North Hopkins generated 307 points to finish behind region champion Henderson County (354) and second-place Murray (324).
