Trigg County finished a program-best eighth at the Girls Region 1 Wrestling Tournament and will have a pair of entries at the state tournament.

MaKenna Hendricks captured the region title in the 185-pound class with three pins in 3:20 of mat time. She defeated Caldwell County’s Virginia Stewart with a first-round pin in the championship match.

She finished second in the region and third at state in the 165-pound class in 2024, the first year the KHSAA sanctioned girls’ wrestling. Hendricks missed last year with a knee injury.

Sophie Parrish finished in third place in the 107-pound class, falling to Central Hardin’s Hera Alojado 12-9 in the semifinals.

Parrish bounced back to score a 49-second win in the consolation semifinal and defeated McCracken County’s Jillian Conn 20-5 in the third-place match.

Parrish was a two-time region champion in the 100-pound class at Caldwell County and followed with a fourth and sixth place finish at state the past two years. Now in the 107-pound class, she was in a division at region with three other wrestlers who placed at state last year.

The podium finishes by Hendricks and Parrish helped Trigg County finish eighth out of 27 schools that spanned the region from Paducah to Bardstown.

John Hardin (170) and North Hardin (157.5) swept the top two spots, while Henderson County (128.5) was third.

Trigg County also had a pair of fifth-place finishes with those wrestlers serving as alternates for the state tournament.

Aniyah Wharton finished in fifth place in the 152-pound class with a 3-3 day.

Avagayle Lingenfelter went 1-2 on the mat and advanced through to fifth place due to a disqualification of a higher-seeded wrestler.

Amayia Canela and Skyler Novosselov also wrestled for Trigg County at the region tourney, hosted by Union County.

Alltech Arena in Lexington will host the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 28.
