Back-to-back losses is what the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons were dealing with going into their Monday night matchup with Butler County. But fortunately for them, they were able to break that streak with a nail-biting 58-57 win on the road.
Madisonville wasted no time grabbing the lead in the first quarter, and Orion Underwood was the driving force. He put up nine points in the period behind a couple made threes, and that was key in the team taking a 17-12 lead after the first eight minutes.
They did slow down quite a bit in the second, as nine points was all they scored compared to Butler County’s 20. But after their solid play in the first quarter, the Maroons went into the locker room down just six points.
Madisonville’s Lake Sumner took the second period to heart, and came out with 10 of the team’s 11 points in the third. Unfortunately for the Maroons, the Bears outscored them yet again, this time by two.
That meant that Madisonville would have to climb out of an eight point hole to get the win.
And that is exactly what they were able to do.
As the quarter wound down, they had fought all the way back to be down 57-55. Gavin Oldham was then able to tie it up at 57 apiece, and an inbounds steal and a foul sent Sumner to the free throw line with six seconds left.
He hit one of two to put the Maroons up by one, and a missed three-pointer at the buzzer by Butler County meant that Madisonville had completed the comeback.
In just under 20 years, these two teams have only played five times, and Madisonville has now won four of those matchups. The only win in that time span for the Bears was in February of 2025.
Madisonville was led by Sumner through the whole game, as he finished with an impressive 29 points, 15 of which came from deep. Underwood was the only other Maroon to get into double-digits, and he did so with 11 points.
They and the rest of the team will be looking to lead the Maroons to a win streak to end the season, and they will get a chance to start in their next game on Tuesday against Owensboro Catholic. Their game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
