The Lyon County Lyons basketball team closed out their regular season at home against Marshall County on Friday night. Lyon had won five games in a row coming into the game, and they were able to continue that streak with a 58-53 win over the Marshals.

The first quarter started off very back and forth between the two teams, but Carson Collins made a three to give Lyon a bit of a lead with just under three minutes left. Marshall closed the gap a bit, but a big Jett Reddick chase-down block in the final seconds allowed the Lyons to go into the second with a 14-11 lead.

Marshall County started the next period by taking the lead with a three and some free throws, and they grew it by getting hot from three. At one point the lead got to 14 after a three-pointer from Marshall’s Neyland Jezik, but Lyon ultimately went into the locker room down 33-22 at half.

Cooper Collins took the Marshals getting hot from beyond the arc personally, and started out the third quarter with an and-one three. This gave the Lyons the momentum they needed to erase the deficit, and they took the lead back with an and-one layup from Bray Kirk.

This allowed Lyon County to go into the fourth and final quarter with a three point lead.

The lead stayed at or around three points for a lot of the fourth quarter, as the two teams went into a timeout with Lyon up 52-49. Marshall was doing their best to make a comeback, but a huge Cooper Collins three extended the lead to six and all but sealed the game.

All Lyon County had to do for the remaining minute and a half was play defense and not foul, and they were able to do just that and get their sixth win in a row.

It is also believed that this was Lyon’s first win against Marshall County since the 1990-91 season where they were able to get the best of the Marshals with a score of 87-72.

The leading scorer in the game for Lyon County was Kirk with 21 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Nolan Coffman and Cooper Collins are also able to get into double-digits with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

They will be looking to help the team get another win in their next game on Tuesday, February 24, against the Rockets of Crittenden County. This game will be part of 5th District action at Crittenden County High School, and is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
