You could say Lyon County’s 73-54 district semifinal win over Trigg County was, in fact, three games combined into one.

The first game consisted of the first 14 minutes, during which neither team was separated by more than 5 points, and the lead changed hands 5 times.

Trigg County, which was beaten by a combined 73 points in the two regular-season matchups with Lyon County, used its up-tempo game to hang with the Lady Lyons.

Lyon County led 13-11 after one quarter and 22-19 with 4:15 left in the first half, and both teams would endure a nearly 2½-minute drought.

The ‘second game’ began in the final two minutes of the first half when Piper Cotham’s layup triggered an 11-3 Lyon County run to end the first half and pushed the Lady Lyons’ lead to 33-22 at the break.

It was all Lyon County in the third quarter as they used an 18-3 run to break the game open and take a 51-25 lead. Trigg County turned the ball over seven times in the quarter, which led to eight Lyon County points while missing 14 of 15 shots from the field.

Lyon County, on the other hand, hit 8 of 16 and outscored the Lady Wildcats 22-6 in the quarter.

Lyon County upped the lead to 62-31 with just over six minutes left when Lady Lyon Coach Ricky Baker swapped out his starters for the reserves.

Trigg County immediately began cutting into the deficit, hitting four 3-pointers over the next four minutes and trimming it to 67-54 with 2:02 left, prompting Baker to reinsert his starters, who scored the final six points of the game.

Cotham led the Lady Lyons with 24 points and 7 rebounds, while Trinity Taylor shrugged off a slow shooting start to end with 23 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four steals.

Courtney Collins added 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Lady Lyons, who shot 39% from the field and hit 6 three-pointers.

Trigg County had four players score in double figures, led by Veyda Grinols’ 19 points and 12 rebounds. Cali Jones also contributed a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and A.J. Navarro added 12 points and five boards.

In her final game as a Lady Wildcat, Alivia Norwood hit 3 three-pointers and scored 13 points.

Trigg County out-rebounded Lyon County by two, but turnovers once again did in the Lady Wildcats.  They turned the ball over 31 times to 15 for Lyon County, who scored 31 points off the turnovers.

Lyon County has won nine straight over the Lady Wildcats dating back four years.

The 54 points are the most Trigg County has scored in a loss this season and the most since the 68-62 loss to Paducah Tilghman on February 13, 2023.

Trigg County’s season ends at 12-14, their most wins in four seasons.

Lyon County sets a new school record with every win from here on out and improved to 25-6. They will play Crittenden County for the District Championship on Thursday at Rocket Arena.

Crittenden County cruised past Livingston Central 60-30 in the other semifinal.

The Lady Rockets took two of the three meetings with Lyon County during the season.
