Problems with numbers of interested athletes have led two Hopkinsville high schools to shutter their girls’ softball programs for the 2026 season.

Officials at University Heights Academy informed YourSportsEdge.Com that the Lady Blazers, who reached the 2nd Region tournament in 2025, would not be fielding a team for the upcoming season.

Softball has not been the only program affected by low numbers at UHA. The Lady Blazer basketball program was shutdown a couple of years back after numbers fell below sustainable levels.

Across town there is a similar softball issue for Heritage Christian Academy. School officials recently made the decision not to play a varsity schedule during 2026.

Both schools are looking to try and build numbers in the future and return to varsity level competition.

The shutdown leaves the 8th District with only three teams this season and two of those, Hopkinsville and Christian County are playing their final seasons ahead of this year’s consolidation of the two schools.
