After not playing a game since May 2024, it was a tough way to open the season Friday night for the Dawson Springs Panthers. Hickman County took advantage of Panther miscues to break open a close game in the top of the third inning by scoring 11 runs on the way to a 17-1 win at Tradewater Park.
The Panthers trailed just 3-0 heading into the third inning, but a couple of errors, three walks, and two passed balls opened the door to a big inning for the Falcons. The big inning was capped off by an inside-the-park home run from Brec Byassee that made it 14-0.
Hickman County then put the game away in the top of the fourth inning. The Falcons scored three more runs to push the lead out to 17-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
After being held hitless for the first three innings, the Panthers led off the bottom of the fourth with a double from Micah Washburn and a single from Logan Young. However, Young was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Panthers avoided the shutout when Braxton Robinson flied out to right to allow Washburn to score from third.
Dawson Springs did not help its own cause in the game, being charged with 9 errors for the night.
Eighth grader Landon Holder was the story of the game for the Falcons, going four innings on the mound, giving up one run on two hits, striking out four, and walking none.
Dawson Springs pitchers Caleb Midkiff and Micah Washburn combined to give up the 17 runs; however, only three of those runs were earned.
Dawson Springs (0-1) will get back to action Saturday playing a pair of games at Ballard Memorial.
