A couple of fielding miscues ended up costing the Christian County Colonels Saturday in Bowling Green. South Warren scored three unearned runs on the way to a 5-3 win over Christian County, handing the Colonels their first loss of the season.
The Spartans built an early lead in the game, thanks in part to a pair of Christian County errors. South Warren converted an error into a single run in the bottom of the first and then another error into two runs in the bottom of the third as the Spartans built a 3-0 lead.
The Colonels came back to tie the game up with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Gage Montes opened the inning by reaching base on a South Warren miscue. Gavin Mitchell singled to give Christian County runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.
Sebastian Dazey came up with a one-out single to score Montes and cut the lead to 3-1. Another single, this one from Chase Fort, scored Mitchell and Dazey, and pulled the Colonels even at 3-3.
South Warren scored the game winners in the bottom of the 5th inning. Justin Capps was hit by a pitch and then Junior Perkins welcome Gavin Mitchell to the mound with a two-run shot to center to give the Spartans a 5-3 lead.
South Warren threatened to blow the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs. However, Dylan Sweeney came in to pitch and set the next three batters down to keep the Colonel hopes alive.
In the top of the 7th, Andrew Mayes and Layton Creamer hit back-to-back singles with one out to give the Colonels runners on the corners. Dylan Sweeney walked with two outs to put the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first base. But it was not to be. Gage Montes grounded out to short to end the game.
Five different Colonels had one hit each in the game. Chase Fort was 1-3 with two RBIs. Sebastian Dazey was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Nolan Young got the start for the Colonels and was charged with four runs, only one of which was earned and gave up four hits. He struck out one and walked none in four innings of work. Gavin Mitchell went one inning and gave up a run on two hits. Dylan Sweeney took to the mound for one inning, giving up no runs on no hits, striking out two and walking none.
Christian County (2-1) will look to get back on track Tuesday when the Colonels go on the road to take on Madisonville-North Hopkins.
