
North Oldham scored six unanswered runs to defeat Trigg County 6-3 in the semifinals of the Class 2A State Softball Tournament in Owensboro on Friday. The Lady Wildcats will play Boyd County for third place on Saturday.
Trigg’s defense, which has been solid for most of the season, had a let-down on Friday, with six errors leading to four unearned runs and providing the difference.
Trigg County, who beat Clay County 9-0 two hours earlier in the quarterfinals, struck for three runs in the third inning when Tember Oliver doubled off the center field fence to score two runs and later scored on a Livia Breckel single.
North Oldham answered with two runs in the fourth inning on singles by Palmer White and Avery Becker and two Trigg errors.
The momentum turned in the fifth inning when White, an eighth grader, made a diving catch in left field that would have scored a run and given Trigg some insurance.
White led off the sixth inning with a single, and Addley Becker followed with a hit that scored a run. Nadia Leber added a double to cap the three-run inning and put North Oldham ahead 5-3.
The Lady Mustangs added an insurance run in the seventh inning on two more Trigg errors and a sacrifice fly.
Trigg County stranded seven runners – five in scoring position – and had another thrown out at the plate.
The Lady Wildcats outhit North Oldham 9-6, with Oliver and MaKenna Hendricks each tallying two hits.
Leber led North Oldham (8-6) with two hits, and White scored two runs.
Kadie Bosmer struck out seven and walked two to improve to 6-4.
Oliver (16-2) struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
Trigg County will play for third place on Saturday against Boyd County (10-7), who lost to Harrison County 3-1 in the other semifinal. Boyd County shut out Allen County-Scottsville 4-0 in their opener.
Because of the forecasted rain in Owensboro on Saturday morning, the start time has been pushed back to 3:45 pm. The game will be broadcast on WKDZ 100.9 FM and online at whvoradio.com.
