A tough day for the boys doubles teams from Madisonville-North Hopkins at the opening round of the state tennis tournament Wednesday in Bowling Green.
After finishing runner-up to their own teammates in the 2nd Region championship match, the Madisonville-North Hopkins doubles pairing of Eli Pinkerton and Noah Mays were in the first wave of doubles matches to take to the courts at South Warren High School in the opening round of the state tennis tournament in Bowling Green.
Pinkerton and Mays drew an opening round matchup against the 4th Region runner-up pairing of Bowling Green’s Ub Han and Seamus Cronin.
Han and Cronin were in control from the beginning of the match. The Purples’ pair took the opening set 6-1. The duo then came back and repeated the feat in the second set with another 6-1 win to close out the match two sets to none.
Also starting at 10:15 Wednesday morning were the 2nd Region champions, Ethan Larkins and Jaden Heath. After knocking off Mays and Pinkerton to claim the regional championship, the pair from Madisonville-North Hopkins were matched up against 3rd Region champs Henry Haines and Joseph Merchant.
Haines and Merchant opened quickly to take the opening set 6-2. The Aces’ duo got stronger as the match went on, taking the second set 6-0 to win the match two sets to none.
The Maroons return home and now get ready for next week’s state team tennis tournament.
