Heritage Christian Academy stayed winless on the season after dropping a chippy 64-58 meeting with visiting North Hardin Christian School on Thursday night. The Warriors trailed by 17 at the halftime break, before Weston Powell led a second-half comeback that came up short.
Myles Burney and Elijah Clanton combined for 11 first-quarter points, outdueling Powell and Elijah Britton’s combined 9, to give North Hardin a 15-11 advantage after eight minutes.
Burney and Clanton stayed hot in the second, leading a 25-point effort for the Falcons and stretching the lead to 17 at the halftime break.
However, the Warriors weren’t going away, turning up the defensive pressure and riding a 12-point third-quarter eruption by Powell to climb back into the game. Powell scored down low and buried a turnaround jumper on the next trip to get the Warriors within 9 at 50-41 with 1:10 left in the third.
Unfortunately for HCA, Powell picked up his fifth foul just a minute into the final quarter with the Warriors trailing by 15. With the Falcons looking to let the clock run, Trenton Hayes drilled a 3 and hit a pull-up jumper to trim the lead to 12 with 4:22 to play. HCA’s Carter Glover hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 64-56 score with :26 on the clock, followed by a technical foul on a Falcon player. Hayes knocked down both free throws for a 6-point margin, but the Warriors ran out of time.
Powell’s 20 led HCA, followed by Hayes with 16 and Britton with 10.
Clanton led all scorers with 22 for the Falcons, joined in double figures by Burney with 21.
