Hunter Swanson did a little bit of everything Thursday. The Clarksville Northwest High School junior doubled, scored twice, drove in a pair of runs, and had a perfect relief appearance on the mound, helping the host Vikings down Fort Campbell 15-4 in five innings.
Having already defeated the Falcons 19-11 earlier this month, Northwest wasted little time in taking control of this latest matchup. After FCHS went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning on Jayden Swann’s team-leading fourth home run of the season, the Vikes punched right back with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The immediate comeback was highlighted by six drawn walks by NHS. The Vikings had a total of 11 bases on balls during the victory. Fort Campbell’s Swann, who started the game, issued four walks and allowed six runs before ever recording an out. He exited with nobody out, yielding to reliever Williams Lubas, who gave up two hits, five runs, and six walks in three innings.
Hunter McHugh gave up four hits, four runs, and four walks in 3 2/3 innings to get the win. He also struck out three. Half of McHugh’s allowed runs came on Swann’s aforementioned homer. The other two were scored by the Falcons on a Lubas RBI groundout and Northwest wild pitch in the fourth. By that point, however, Northwest had already built a 13-4 advantage.
Fort Campbell (2-15) will try to end its 11-game losing streak at 5:30 p.m. Friday when the Falcons take on Dawson Springs in the first of three straight home games. The last FCHS win came March 28 against Heritage Christian Academy.
