Heritage Christian Academy may be a year away from being a contender for the Kentucky Christian Athletic Association state title, but don’t overlook what the Warriors could get done on the court this year.
The Warriors return eight juniors from last year’s team that went 5-8 against KCAA competition and lost in the first round of the KCAA state tournament for the second straight year. Among those returning is Gavin Fowler, who was named to the KCAA State All-Tournament team last year.
Veteran coach Daryl Hallmark, who won a state championship at Hopkinsville High in 1985, has several pieces he can mix and match at different positions on the floor. Kam Cunningham, the lone senior on the squad, will see considerable time at point guard. He will have some inside options with juniors Austin Crawford and transfer Josh Jones, who attended Grace Baptist in Madisonville which doesn’t offer basketball.
One dilemma Hallmark could face is giving enough playing time to a 10-deep squad that all saw varsity time last year. However, it’s the same problem he was able to balance in his years at Hopkinsville that led to multiple region titles.
Anything the Warriors accomplish this year could be considered an appetizer to what lies ahead.
