Once John Calipari saw North Laurel junior standout Reed Sheppard play in person he obviously liked what he saw because the Kentucky head coach offered him a scholarship Friday — only the fourth scholarship offer he has extended in the 2023 recruiting class. The 6-3 Sheppard — the son of former UK standouts Stacey Reed and Jeff Sheppard — announced the UK offer on Twitter after playing a game at the Adidas 3SSB (3 Stripes Select Basketball) event — which runs through Sunday — in Birmingham, Ala.

Calipari and assistant coaches Orlando Antigua, Chin Coleman, and Jai Lucas all watched him play Thursday, and then Antigua came back Friday to watch Sheppard. He had 23 points in the first half and finished the game with six 3-pointers in his team’s win.

Sheppard already had a scholarship offer from Louisville — along with others — and many Kentucky fans were beginning to think Calipari was not going to offer the legacy recruit who averaged 30 points per game and shot 41 percent from 3-point range last season when he led the state in scoring.

Sheppard, 17, had a quadruple-double — 24 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 steals — as a freshman and came back last season with a triple-double of 50 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds against rival South Laurel

He has already climbed into the top 40 of the Rivals.com rankings for the 2023 recruiting class.

  1. I think he will be the best player ky. has produced since Rex Chapman. I hope he picks the Cats when it’s all said and done.
