On the road in Morton’s Gap on Thursday night and looking for their first win of the season, the UHA girls’ basketball team found baskets hard to come by in a 72-27 loss to hosts Hopkins County Central.
The Lady Storm score 72 points for the second time in two blowout victories to start the season, while the Lady Blazers slip to 0-2.
Hopkins Central jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but UHA pulled back to within three points after a layup by Alicia Davis. However, despite 8 1st-quarter points for Davis, the Lady Storm closed on an 8-2 run to lead 17-8. Emile Jones scored 12 of her 18 points in the opening frame to pace Hopkins Central.
Briana Fritz and Brooklyn Clark combined for 16 points in the 2nd and Hopkins Central began the quarter on an 11-0 spurt to build the margin to 21. The Lady Storm outscored UHA 22-8 to lead 39-16 at the break.
The Lady Blazers failed to score double-digits in any quarter and Hopkins Central got nine 3rd-quarter points from Lillie Whitaker-Greer and eight more from Clark in the 4th.
Clark and Jones led all scorers with 18 each for the Lady Storm, followed by Fritz with 14.
Davis finished with 17 points and no other Lady Blazer scored more than four.
