
Christian County hosted its Colonel Wrestling Invitational Thursday and finished in fifth place out of 19 teams.
The Colonels had one champion and two wrestlers finish second in the event.
A.J. Harvey, who came into the day ranked seventh in the state in the 285-pound class by kentuckywrestling.com, won the class Thursday with a pin of Paducah Tilghman’s Matt Mooney, the No. 9 ranked wrestler. Harvey also beat a pair of ranked wrestlers on his way to the win.
Mason Kellett took second place in the 150-pound class with a 2-1 record for the day. Kellett is ranked fifth in the state in the weight class.
JaRi Campbell, ranked fifth in the 113-pound class, won three matches before falling to Union County’s Jordyn Raney, the top-ranked wrestler in the state, in the championship match.
Ashton Smith finished third in the 106-pound class with a 4-1 record. His only loss was to 11th ranked Logan Brown of Caldwell County.
Deameion Leavell finished fourth in the 132-pound class. The eighth-grader is the highest-ranked middle schooler in the state at 15th. His only losses were to a pair of top-five wrestlers by decision.
Jacob Newby came in fourth place in the 165-pound class. His only two losses in the tourney came to the same wrestler – Daniel Hammond of Beech High School.
Christian County’s 126.5 points were just behind fourth-place Taylor County. Union County and Caldwell County finished 1-2 in the tourney held at Lyle Dunbar Gymnasium.
