
It turned out to be a really good thing for the Crittenden County Lady Rockets that they had built a hefty second half lead. The Lady Rockets survived a dry spell of more than six minutes that saw Lyon County come from 21 points down to get within 9, as they managed to get out of Eddyville with a 60-44 win Tuesday night.
The Lady Rockets had controlled the game from the very beginning, very much looking the part of the favorites in the 5th District and a dark horse in the 2nd Region.
After Lyon County scored the first basket of the game, Crittenden County scored ten straight points to go up 10-2. They would never trail again. As the quarter ended, the Lady Rocket lead was at 14-8.
The Crittenden County trapping defense began to cause serious issues for the Lady Lyons in the second quarter. The lead would reach double figures at 20-10 and grow to as much as 12 points on three separate occasions in the quarter, the last of which came at the break at 32-20.
Natalie Boone and Taylor Guess were a handful on both ends of the court for Crittenden County. The Lady Rocket duo scored a combined 27 points in the opening half and their pressure out front in the half-court led to several turnovers for the Lady Lyons.
Rose Smith and Calista Collins scored 18 between them to keep the Lady Lyons in the game.
The third quarter was more of what happened in the first half. Crittenden County ran the lead out to as many as 21 points, the last time coming at 49-28 late in the third. Then, the Lady Rockets appeared to go into “idle” mode and they almost could not come out of it.
Lilly Perry scored four quick points for Lyon County to end the third and cut the lead to 49-32. Lyon County then scored the first eight points of the final quarter to cut the lead to 49-40.
Over the end of the third quarter and the first 5:56 of the fourth, the basket was nowhere to be found for the Lady Rockets. But, the Lyon County rally would end at the nine-point deficit, as Crittenden County was able to generate just enough offense down the stretch to pull back out to a sixteen-point win.
Crittenden County’s Natalie Boone led all scorers with 26 points. Taylor Guess added 19 for the Lady Rockets.
Calista Collins ended the night with 16 for Lyon County. Rose Smith chipped in with 14 of her own.
The loss drops the Lady Lyons to 6-7 overall, and 1-2 in the 5th District.
Crittenden County improves to 10-2 and 4-0.
