Webster Outlasts Caldwell 77-73 in Double Overtime

Webster County outlasted Caldwell County 77-73 in a double-overtime marathon Saturday afternoon in Princeton.

The Tigers came out hot early, going up 17-7 after one quarter and leading by as much as 12 points in the second period.

Caldwell (15-5) took a 29-21 advantage to halftime.

Webster (10-12) came back to lead briefly in the third quarter before the Tigers took a 40-38 edge to the final frame.

The teams went to overtime tied 55-55.

A late bucket by Aaron Harmon in OT knotted the game at 65-65 and set up the second extra session.

Caldwell led 70-68 with 2:09 to go on a driving layup by Zavy Bumphus.

But a 3-pointer by Trevor Baker put Webster up 72-70 and the Trojans never trailed again.

However, Caldwell was within 75-73 with 12 seconds remaining after Jabrion Spikes hit two free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.

But Spikes missed his third attempt and Webster rebounded. DeShawn Murphy was fouled with 10 seconds to play and made both free throws to make it a 77-73 ballgame.

Murphy led Webster with 24 points — 23 of those coming after halftime. Harmon got 17 of his 20 after the break. The Trojans also got 12 points from Bradin Nelson.

Spikes totaled 31 to top the Caldwell scoresheeet. Demaurius Thompson had 13 points and Bumphus finished with 10.

Caldwell had won nine of its previous 10 games.

The Tigers have a busy week coming up with four games on the schedule. Caldwell has a 7th District makeup date at Madisonville-North Hopkins on Monday before traveling to Marshall County on Tuesday. The Tigers then host Madisonville on Friday before finishing the week Saturday at Lyon County.
