Logan Smiley struck out 11 and fired a three-hitter as Caldwell County picked up its first baseball win of the season.
A three-run fifth inning was the difference as the Tigers turned away Livingston Central 4-1 Thursday at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.
Smiley needed 97 pitches in the complete-game effort. His one run allowed was an unearned tally in the top of the first inning.
Caldwell tied the game in the fourth inning when Cole Slone’s two-out double brought in Deontaye Walls, who had doubled to start the frame.
The Tigers (1-2) then put together the three-run rally in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Smiley’s single to right with two outs brought in the go-ahead run. Brady Holeman singled home another run, while the final run came in on an error.
Smiley surrendered a leadoff single in the sixth, but then retired the last six Cardinals he faced to nail down the victory.
Smiley gave up just three singles without issuing a free pass.
At the plate, Smiley was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Walls finished 2-for-2 and scored twice.
Livingston is now 0-3.
Caldwell is scheduled to visit Trigg County on Friday while Livingston travels to Christian Fellowship School.
