The Caldwell County Tiger baseball team picked up its 10th win of the season and avenged a loss earlier this year by defeating University Heights Academy 15-5 in six innings at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton on Monday.
The game featured two weather delays, totaling well over an hour.
Hunter Newsom had a two-run home run for the Tigers as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He drove in four runs. Brady Holeman was 2-for-4, drove in three and scored three times while senior Logan Smiley went 2-for-4 on senior day and scored three times.
Ben Goodaker improved to 5-1 on the mound this season. Goodaker allowed three earned runs on four base hits. He struck out three and walked two.
UHA (11-12) took a 5-3 lead with a five-run third. Ty Hunt’s two-run single to center was the big hit of the inning, putting the Blazers up 4-3 after Caldwell had scored three times in the bottom of the fist inning.
But Caldwell (10-6) tied the game on Newsom’s two-run homer in the bottom of the third, then took the lead for good with a seven-run fourth inning.
Newsom also drove in two runs during the big frame with a double. That helped the Tigers take a 12-5 advantage.
Caldwell added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to reach the 10-run mercy rule.
Ryan Luckey and Eston Glover were each 2-for-2 for the Blazers.
UHA had taken a 4-0 decision when the teams met in Hopkinsville in the season opener on March 14.
