Make it a region tennis championship for Hopkinsville senior Sophie Maddux. Maddux claimed the title with a pair of wins Wednesday evening at Ruff Park.
Maddux began her night with a semifinal matchup against Kendall Warren, from Henderson County. Maddux was on the top of her game from the beginning and rolled through the match, picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win to move into the final.
Awaiting Maddux in the final would be her teammate Abby Moss. Moss, who had been dealing with strep throat throughout the tournament, had to come from behind to win her semifinal match against Zoe Lawrence, of Henderson County.
Lawrence took the opening set from Moss 6-4. Battling through the illness, Moss rebounded strong to take the second set 6-1. Moss would then win the tiebreaker 10-7 to claim the match and move into the championship match against Maddux.
Moss would put up a fight, but one has to wonder if the combination of Maddux’s skill, the long semifinal match, and the case of strep throat were just a bit too much. Maddux would go on to win the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, to claim her second consecutive region title.
In addition to the championship, Maddux was also presented with the region’s Sportsmanship Award.
All four semifinalists will advance on to the state tournament in Lexington.

Sophie is a champ. Grateful she took home the sportsmanship award for the Region as well.
