Defense may be the key to the Todd County Central boys’ soccer team’s strong start to the season, but it was the offense’s turn to shine on Tuesday in a 10-0 rout of hosts Logan County.
The Rebels improve to 3-0-1 and have outscored their opposition 16-1. The mercy-rule victory is the program’s first since an 11-1 win over Russellville in 2015.
Todd Central was a little slow out of the gate but still led 3-0 twenty minutes into the game. Chi Herrera scored the opener on a corner from Chris Salazar, and then it was Salazar’s turn to score off an assist from Herrera to double the advantage.
After Herrera scored unassisted after a poor Logan County clearance, the Rebels earned a penalty kick with fifteen minutes left in the half. Senior goalkeeper Jonah Rager got the call, and he made no mistake from 12 yards out to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Jose Anastacio added the next goal off an assist from Zack Robinson, and Todd Central led 5-0 at the halftime break.
The Rebels only needed ten minutes to put the match to bed in the second half. Robinson opened the scoring with a pair of strikes from outside the box in the first few minutes before Trey Osborne finished off a cross from Ivan Lopez.
Lopez got on the scoresheet less than a minute later, and Robinson capped his hat trick and ended the game with a looping 30-yard effort that dropped in just below the crossbar.
Rager was only forced into four saves on a night where he scored and recorded a shutout.
The Rebels have another district matchup on Thursday when Franklin-Simpson visits Elkton. The Wildcats are also 1-0 in district play after a 7-0 victory over Russellville on Tuesday.
