Beachcomber is a hidden gem at St. Augustine Beach

When I travel I like to find spots to eat that the locals consider special and go-to places for them.

Thanks to 1992 Boyle County High School graduate Chelsea Schneider Freeman, who is now a realtor in St. Augustine, we found one of those spots Monday in St. Augustine.

The Beachcomber is by the sand dunes and the beach is just a short walk away. You can eat outdoors on picnic tables and parking… well it can be a challenge because of the restaurant’s location and so many people being there even for Monday lunch.

The restaurant has been at this location for almost 40 years but changed ownership about 10 years ago and executive chef Steve LeClair is one of the owners. And that’s right — executive chef for a beachfront bar/restaurant.

But this place has fresh seafood, out of the ordinary sandwiches — including a hamburger topped with shrimp — and local beers.

Believe it or not, there are daily specials and I picked the Mahi Mahi tacos topped with cabbage, sriracha aioli and pineapple pico thanks to the recommendation of our waitress with a side of red beans and rice for about $16 that was terrific both for quality and quantity.

I really wanted to try the jalapeño cucumber margarita but decided that might be a bit much at 2 p.m.

You can find this hidden gem 2 A St, St Augustine Beach, FL 32080. (Phone is 904-471-3744).
