
Mayfield used a 19-0 run to begin the second quarter and held Fort Campbell to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters to coast to a 72-29 win on post Thursday.
The Cardinals moved to 2-0 just days after seeing several football players conclude their season at the state championship and move over to the basketball team.
The Cardinals pushed to an 11-2 lead to begin the game and up its lead to 19-6 with 1:44 left.
Fort Campbell turned up its press and scored the final seven points of the quarter to cut the Mayfield lead to 23-14.
Mayfield then turned up some heat of its own as six Cardinals scored in the second quarter and knocked down four of its seven 3-pointers in the game. Mayfield outscored the Falcons 24-7 in the quarter to build a 47-21 lead by intermission.
The offensive woes continued in the second half as the Falcons failed to make a field goal after halftime. Their eight points came on 8-of-10 free throw shooting. The Falcons finished the game shooting 9-of-27 from the field (33%).
Mayfield hit 30-of-57 from the field (53%), including 7-of-16 from 3-point range.
Aidan Blaszkowski led the Falcons with nine points and Dekevius Lewis added seven points.
Four Mayfield players scored in double figures led by Braden Morris’ 14 points.
