Lady Wildcats Hope Florida Trip Serves as Springboard

The Trigg County Lady Wildcats are hoping the program’s first-ever trip to Florida serves as a springboard for the second half of the season.

The Lady Wildcats open play Wednesday at the Marlin Holiday Classic at Panama City Beach against Mitchell County, Georgia.

Trigg County carries a 3-5 record into the event following a nine-day layoff. Trigg’s last game was a 56-48 loss to Muhlenberg County on Dec. 19.

The Lady Wildcats will face one of the top sophomores in Georgia in the opener. Amira Walters-Smith is averaging 24 points and four steals for Mitchell County (5-4), who has turned things around after a one-win season in 2021-22.

Trigg County is in the same bracket as Pleasant Grove High School, a top-20 school in Alabama that won 27 games last year.

The eight-team, three-day event features a double-elimination format.
