Caldwell Rallies Last in 6-5 Win Over Calloway

Caldwell County answered Calloway County’s rally with one of its own.

The visiting Lakers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead on Saturday at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.

But the Tigers answered with two runs in the home half of the sixth to pull out a 6-5 victory.

Caldwell (4-4) had led for most of the day against Calloway (3-5).

Hunter Newsom drove in a run with a single and then scored on an error as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second, Luke Parker singled and later scored on a ground out to second by Channing Puckett to put Caldwell up 3-0.

An RBI ground out by Bryson Dennis got Calloway on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning.
Each team added a run in the fifth.

Conner Lockart drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center for Calloway to make it 3-2.

Cole Slone’s RBI ground out to second base in the bottom of the inning gave Caldwell a 4-2 advantage.

Calloway scored three times with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to go in front for the first time.

Cadwell Turner doubled home two runs with a shot to center.

Cole Lockhart then drove in Turner with a double to left to push the Lakers in front 5-4.

But Caldwell came back in the bottom of the inning.

Jamus Carneyhan doubled to lead off the frame then Luke Parker drew a one-out walk. Parker then stole second.

Collin Whittington then drove in the tying run with a grounder to short. Parker came around to score when the throw got away at first base.

Scott Cortner then put down Calloway in order in the top of the seventh inning to finish off the victory.

Cortner (1-2) pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his first pitching win of the season. Cortner retired all four batters he faced.

Cortner was the fourth Tiger hurler of the day, following Brady Holeman, Channing Puckett and Whittington.

Dennis suffered the loss for Calloway. He went six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven base hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Whittington was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for the Tigers.

Braden Pingel was 2-for-4 for the Lakers.

Caldwell next goes to Henderson County on Monday.
