It was what you might call an intense finish to the game. The Christian County Colonels used a big seventh inning rally to overcome a one-run deficit and take the lead and then had to hold on for everything they were worth to take an 8-6 win over Henderson County Saturday afternoon.
The game entered the seventh inning with the southern Colonels trailing 4-3. Jacob Jenkins led off the seventh with a single, followed by a double from Elijah Underhill. Carter Sholar drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
Aiden Lewis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Elijah Underhill scored on a passed ball and then Gage Montes singled to drive in Carter Sholar and make it a 6-4 Christian County lead. Preston Phan drove in Aiden Lewis with a sacrifice to make it 7-4 as Henderson County got the first out of the inning. Jonathan Lewis scored later after a steal of third to make it 8-4.
Just as the southern Colonels started to maybe feel a little bit comfortable, the northern Colonels made one last run to make the game ‘interesting.’ Two walks and a single with one out loaded the bases for Henderson County. Henderson’s Paxton Gardner drove in two runs with a single to make it 8-6. After a strikeout, Timothy Wolfe singled to load the bases for Henderson County, putting the tying run on second base and the game-winning run on first base.
But the rally ended there. Gage Montes was able to strike out Alec Satterfield to close out the game.
The Colonels got off to a good start in the game. After back-to-back batters were hit by a pitch to start the game for Christian County, Aiden Lewis drove in one run with a single while Gage Montes drove in another with a single of his own to put Christian County up 2-0.
Henderson scored two in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth to take a two-run lead.
Christian County cut the lead in half when Elijah Underhill singled, stole second, third, and then stole home to make it 4-3.
Underhill finished the game 3-3 with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Gage Montes was 2-4 with two RBIs.
Gage Montes got the win in relief for Christian County. Montes gave up two runs on five hits, striking out two and walking two.
The Colonels have now won seven straight and 11 of their last 13.
