In what felt like a bit of a formality despite the presence of a Fort Campbell team that punctuated its best season in recent memory with an 11-0 rout of Hopkinsville on Monday, the Christian County softball team secured its 19th-straight 8th-District title with a 15-0 win over the Lady Falcons on Tuesday.
The Lady Colonels won their fourth in a row to improve to 19-12 while outscoring district competition 69-4, 30-0 in the two tournament matchups.
Christian County’s Saniya Shields opened the bottom of the 1st with a single and scored the game’s first run on a Karlee Crick ground out. Gracie Harned followed with an RBI single and came home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 advantage.
With two outs, the Lady Colonels poured it on with eight runs on RBI singles by Allie Houchens and Shields and run-scoring doubles by Jada Miller and Crick. Harned capped the inning with a two-run home run to center to make the score 11-0 after one.
Jordan Turner was lights out in the circle for Christian County, allowing a single hit over two shutout innings with six strikeouts. Alyssa Petterson walked one and struck another in an inning of relief.
Crick highlighted a four-run 3rd with an RBI double to finish with three hits and four runs driven in. Harned was two for two at the plate with three RBI, Shields had two hits and an RBI, and Houchens drove in two.
Carrie McCrary took the loss in the circle for Fort Campbell, allowing 11 runs, three earned, on ten hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kiley McCrary pitched the 3rd, surrendering four runs, three earned, on a single hit with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
