Fouls and subsequent free throws were the difference on Saturday for the Fort Campbell girls’ basketball team in a 44-36 loss to hosts Cloverport. Five Lady Falcons fouled out and they were outscored by 15 points at the charity stripe to slip to 0-5 on the season ahead of a trip to Christian Fellowship on Tuesday.
Cloverport’s Campbell Moore scored five first-quarter points, and the Lady Aces held Fort Campbell to a single bucket to lead 10-2.
The Lady Falcons bounced back in the second quarter behind five points from Madison Newingham and four each for Jerni Hicks and Rosella Rajj. Fort Campbell trimmed five points off the deficit to only trail 19-16 at the halftime break.
Moore added seven points in the third for Cloverport and Alexis Hurst scored six to help the Lady Aces push the advantage back to eight with a quarter to play. However, Fort Campbell scored the first ten points of the fourth to surge in front 36-34, but the wheels fell off a short time later after Rajj picked up her fifth foul.
The Lady Falcons didn’t score over the final 4:08 of the game and Cloverport hit six of ten free throw attempts in the frame to pull away for the win. Fort Campbell finished 6/16 at the line, while the Lady Aces made 21 of 41 attempts on the way to their second victory of the season.
Rajj led the Lady Falcons with 13 points, followed by Jerni Hicks with ten points and six rebounds. Newingham finished with eight points and eight boards, and India Price and Liticyia Cabrera each hauled down nine rebounds.
Cloverport’s Moore scored a game-high 23, and Hurst added 12.
