Caldwell County is the first baseball team in the 2nd Region to reach double digits in the win column this season.
Cole Slone went seven strong innings on the mound as the Tigers edged Marshall County 3-2 Friday in Draffenville.
The victory improved the Tigers to 10-2 with still two more days left in the month of March.
Ari Wells was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in while Collin Whittington doubled home an important insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.
That extra run was pivotal in the bottom of the seventh after the first two hitters singled for the Marshals and were bunted to second and third.
A sacrifice fly to center plated one run but was the second out of the inning. With the potential tying run still at second, Slone got the next batter to fly out to centerfielder Carter Whittington for the final out of the game.
Marshall (3-8), which outhit Caldwell 5-4 in the contest, took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Caldwell tied things in the third.
A two-out single to right by Wells knotted the game.
Wells put Caldwell in front in the top of the fifth when he hit into a fielder’s choice to the shortstop with runners at first and third. David Ginn crossed the plate to put the Tigers up 2-1.
Slone (3-0) allowed two earned runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Caldwell has won nine of its last 10 outings.
The Tigers will play at home on Saturday, hosting Murray for a 1 p.m. game at the VFW Ballpark.
