When Mark Pope could not fill his final roster spot with a player that fits his style of basketball, the new University of Kentucky coach held tryouts on campus.

Former Madisonville-North Hopkins player Zach Tow tried out and was announced as a walk-on this week as Kentucky’s newest roster addition. Former coach John Calipari had walk-ons on his roster but they were reserved for players with connections to the coaching staff or in-state players.

Tow, who is a 6-5 junior, was All-District and All-Region at Madisonville and averaged 12.5 points and 11.5 rebounds his senior season in 2021-22. As a junior, he averaged 11 points and 11 rebounds.

His sister Kaylee was a three-time All-American softball player at the University of Alabama, made a couple of College World Series appearances, and has her name sprinkled throughout the Tide softball record book.

For the first time in a while, there are two players from the Second Region on UK’s basketball roster. Tow joins Travis Perry of Lyon County, a former foe in high school.
