
Webster County controlled the action for most of the night, but Trigg County made things interesting with a pair of late goals.
However, the Trojans answered the late Trigg challenge to advance to the 2nd Region semifinals with a 5-2 triumph in opening-round action Monday at the Stadium of Champions in Hopkins.
Webster (9-10-2), the 6th District runner-up, will take on 8th District champion University Heights Academy (15-7) in Tuesday’s 7:15 semifinal. The Blazers moved on by beating Caldwell County 5-0 on Monday.
Webster outshot Trigg 16-1 in the first half while building a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
The Trojans still had that margin midway through the second half before Trigg’s first tally of the night gave the Wildcats some life.
Kyle Choate’s shot from the left side went off a defender and into the net to make it a 3-1 contest with 17:02 to play.
The Wildcats then made it a one-goal game with still 10:52 remaining when Slaton Carter put back a rebound following a corner kick.
Webster then had some anxious moments late before Kahner Phelps finished off a corner kick in front of the net with 4:18 remaining to give the Trojans some cushion.
Brian Alfaro added another goal with just 2:28 left to restore the Trojans’ three-goal edge and put away the regional win.
Webster finished the night with a 28-8 edge in shots.

Harrison Warren had three stops for the Trojans.
Five different Webster players had goals in the contest.
Pasacual Alonzo got the scoring started with 21:44 left in the first half. Alfaro picked up an assist on the play.
Johel Bautista scored at the 9:08 mark of the first half, blasting home a rebound off a blocked shot to put Webster up 2-0.
Jimmy Higdon finished in front of the net after a free kick was chipped into the box by Bautista with 1:07 left in the first half.
Bautista had two assists in the match while Alonzo had one helper.
Trigg ends the season at 6-9-5.
