A mason is usually someone who lays bricks for a foundation. However, St. Mary’s Mason Clements did no such thing on Monday, hitting three 3-pointers in a key two-minute stretch late to give the Lady Vikings a 48-36 win over Trigg County.

Trigg County had trimmed a 19-point deficit to three on back-to-back buckets by Reese Bush with 6:13 left. However, those would be the last field goals for the Lady Wildcats, who were outscored 12-3 the rest of the way.

St. Mary hit three 3-pointers in the opening quarter to race out to a 15-5 lead and cause the Lady Wildcats to play catch-up the rest of the night. The Lady Wildcats endured a six-minute scoring drought in the first quarter and five minutes in the second quarter without a field goal as St. Mary built a 29-10 lead.

Trigg began to chip away at the free throw line, cutting the deficit to 31-17 by halftime and getting to within 33-29 late in the third quarter behind five points from Veyda Grinols.

Bush led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Grinols added nine points and seven rebounds.

Trigg County outrebounded the hosts 37-22 but 25 Lady Wildcat turnovers resulted in 19 St. Mary points.

Clements led St. Mary with 16 points and Audrey Sims added 12 points. The Lady Vikings hit 8-of-21 from behind the arc.

St. Mary snapped a four-game losing streak to Trigg County with its first win in the series since 2017.

Trigg County returns to the court next Tuesday with a home district game against Crittenden County, a 66-41 winner over Caldwell County on Monday.
